Ohio Sacred Harp - Email Community

Ohio singers have established an email list where singers post announcements about events and other singing news in Ohio and neighboring states. To subscribe, simply send a blank email message to the following address:

You will receive a confirmation message--you will need to reply to this message. That's all there is to it. You'll receive a lengthy welcome message, which is quoted below. You can unsubscribe at any time--just follow the instructions in the welcome message.

Welcome Message - All New Subscribers Receive This Message

Welcome to the Ohio Sacred Harp email community!

This email list has been established so that we can more easily promote and organize local and regional Sacred Harp singing events in Ohio and also so that we can keep abreast of events in neighboring states. Subscribers to this mailing list will receive the most up-to-date information on special events, changes of venue, last-minute reminders, and other news regarding Sacred Harp in the Ohio region.

POSTAL MAILINGS - We no longer send postal announcements of Ohio events. Most years, there is a mailing announcing the Ohio Convention, but notification of other events is only by email.

REGIONAL SCOPE OF LIST - While we expect that the subscriber base and the message content will pertain primarily to Ohio, we encourage singers from neighboring states to subscribe and announce events accessible to Ohio singers. Announcements of faraway events would probably be more appropriate on the national list, "singings@fasola.org".

IMPORTANT ADDRESSES - If you are new to email lists, you will want to be aware of some important addresses:

  • (1) "Ohio-Sacred-Harp@yahoogroups.com" (email address to post messages) - To send or "post" a message to all subscribers, just send your email message to the address "Ohio-Sacred-Harp@yahoogroups.com" and all subscribers will receive the message. It's that easy--but remember, anything you send to that address will go to *every* subscriber.
  • (2) "Ohio-Sacred-Harp-subscribe@yahoogroups.com" (subscribe), "Ohio-Sacred-Harp-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com" (unsubscribe) - To subscribe or unsubscribe to the mailing list, send a blank message to either "Ohio-Sacred-Harp-subscribe@yahoogroups.com" or Ohio-Sacred-Harp-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com".
  • (3) "Ohio-Sacred-Harp-owner@yahoogroups.com" (moderator email address) - All of the above functions are handled automatically; if for any reason you have problems you can write the list moderator at "Ohio-Sacred-Harp-owner@yahoogroups.com".
  • (4) "http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Ohio-Sacred-Harp" (list website) - This is the address for the Yahoogroups webpage for our mailing list. There you can change the options for receiving and displaying email from the list.

MODERATED LIST - For the time being, this list is set up as a "moderated" list, meaning that I will personally screen messages for content before they appear on the list. The primary purpose in this is to block junk mail and to prevent accidental posts by subscribers, both of which are common though infrequent in mailing lists. As a consequence, there may be a time delay of as much as a day or two before I read and moderate messages. If you send a message and it doesn't appear for more than two days, something may not have worked properly. Either send it again or contact the moderator.

REPLIES - When you reply to an Ohio-Sacred-Harp message, the address that automatically goes in the "To:" box is the message of the author of the message. If you want to reply to the whole list, you will need to type in the list address in the "To:" fiele, i.e., "Ohio-Sacred-Harp@yahoogroups.com".

MESSAGE CONTENT - In posting messages to the list, there are some general courtesies I feel certain everyone will endorse. For example, I hope that we can maintain a reasonably low message traffic, so that those who receive email at work will not be inundated with personal messages. Also, we should anticipate that some subscribers will have never been to a singing, so any message that appears might be their first contact with Sacred Harp. A positive and encouraging tone and accurate and straightforward information is the best way to build our singing community.

Thanks - I hope to see everyone at a singing soon!
